Troubleshooting

Help! I installed my new screen and I'm having issues!

Note: The information here only applies to genuine CUESCREENS products. You risk damage to your unit if you are not installing genuine products. Already ordered a competitor product and it's not working? We recommend ordering our dual mode touch screen and installing it per the instructions.

Screen Not Responding After Replacement

Give it time: Some 2017+ vehicles will be unresponsive immediately after screen replacement — this is normal. Plug the CUE system in, lock the car, and wait 15 minutes. This gives all the computers a chance to boot up. Then retest.

#1 Most Common — Improperly Inserted Ribbon Cable

Every day we hear from customers whose ribbon cable is not fully seated. Your installation must look exactly like the photo below. If there is any doubt, reseat the connection until it matches.

Correct ribbon cable insertion — 1mm max exposed
This is the only correct installation

The ribbon cable must be fully inserted into the CUE module slot with no more than 1mm visible. Partially seated cables are the #1 cause of a non-responsive screen after replacement.

Below are real examples sent in by customers and professional mechanics who followed the instructions carefully but still had issues — all traced back to the ribbon cable:

Even experienced installers can miss this. When in doubt, remove and reinsert the ribbon cable until it is fully and evenly seated.

Another common mistake

The cable appears inserted but is not fully locked. Always close the black locking clip after seating the cable.

Ribbon cable orientation matters

Black side faces up, gold pins face down toward the circuit board. Inserting it upside down is a common mistake that results in no response.

#2 Most Common — Cut or Torn Ribbon Cable

We frequently receive screens returned as "defective" that are actually torn or cut during installation. These tears can be very small and hard to see. Check the images below for examples.

Small tears along the edge of the ribbon cable will cause the screen to be completely unresponsive. Inspect the full length of the cable carefully before concluding the screen is defective.

This tear occurred during removal of the old screen. Always use plastic trim tools and handle the ribbon cable with care throughout the entire process.

#3 Most Common — Damaged or Destroyed Connector

Inexperienced mechanics using aggressive tools in the wrong areas can break locking clips, rip connectors off the board, or tear cables. If this has happened, the best solution is to replace the entire unit.

Connector damage from improper tools

Always use plastic trim tools and micro ESD pliers — never metal tools near the connectors. If a connector has been ripped off the board, the unit will need to be replaced.

#4 Most Common — HMI Module Locked Up

The HMI is a separate module that can occasionally freeze and make it appear the touch screen isn't responding. Try resetting it with the steps below.

HMI Reset Steps:
  1. Turn the ignition on (engine not running).
  2. Open the CUE faceplate, exposing the storage area behind it.
  3. With the faceplate up, turn off the vehicle.
  4. Open the driver's side door.
  5. Wait 30–60 seconds with the driver's side door open.
  6. Close the driver's side door and start the vehicle.
  7. Lower the faceplate.
  8. Attempt using the touch screen again.

Unit Blacked Out — Most Common Causes

Check these conditions first before troubleshooting further:
  • Blue cable plugged into the back of the unit
  • Any CD changer reconnected
  • AC faceplate fully closed and flush with the face of the unit

If you've checked all of the above and are still experiencing blackout issues, it is likely due to a white ribbon cable inside the unit becoming loose during installation. As noted in the installation guide, you should never touch a white ribbon cable.

Open the unit and check the main ribbon cables. The most common cable to become loose during installation is on the back of the LCD panel. Carefully reconnect any loose cables — do not force or damage anything.
