Ford Recalls 1.74 Million Vehicles for Rearview Camera and Infotainment Screen Failures

Ford Motor Company has announced a major recall affecting approximately 1.74 million vehicles in the United States due to issues involving the infotainment system and rearview camera display.

The recall addresses two separate problems that could interfere with a driver’s ability to see what is behind their vehicle when reversing, which regulators say could increase the risk of a crash.

According to reporting by PEOPLE, the recalls were filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and involve software and hardware issues affecting the vehicle's central touchscreen and camera system.

Which Vehicles Are Affected

The recall covers several popular Ford and Lincoln models.

Recall #1 – Rearview Camera Image Flipping

The first recall affects approximately 889,950 vehicles, including:

  • 2020–2022 Ford Escape
  • 2020–2022 Lincoln Corsair
  • 2020–2024 Ford Explorer
  • 2020–2024 Lincoln Aviator

In these vehicles, the rearview camera image may appear flipped or inverted on the infotainment display immediately after the vehicle is started. This occurs due to a defect involving the touchscreen’s integrated circuit located on the display’s printed circuit board.

The malfunction can cause the entire screen display—including buttons and camera guidelines—to appear incorrectly oriented.

Second Recall: Infotainment System Overheating

A second recall affects approximately 849,310 vehicles, including:

  • 2021–2024 Ford Edge
  • 2021–2026 Ford Bronco

In these vehicles, the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM), which controls the infotainment system, may overheat.

When this happens, the system may enter a temporary thermal shutdown lasting up to five minutes. During this shutdown, the center touchscreen may go blank and the rearview camera may not display when the vehicle is in reverse.

This loss of camera functionality can reduce the driver’s visibility behind the vehicle.

Why Rearview Camera Failures Matter

Rearview cameras have been required on all new vehicles sold in the United States since 2018 under federal safety regulations.

If the camera image is flipped, distorted, or unavailable, drivers may lose a critical safety aid used for:

  • Backing out of parking spaces
  • Detecting pedestrians or obstacles
  • Aligning the vehicle during parking

Regulators warn that a malfunctioning camera display can increase the likelihood of a collision, particularly in tight spaces or crowded parking areas.

Have There Been Any Accidents?

Ford stated that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to these issues at this time.

However, the recall was issued because the defects could potentially create unsafe driving conditions.

How Ford Plans to Fix the Issue

The affected vehicles will receive software updates to correct the infotainment system problems.

Depending on the vehicle and issue, the fix will be delivered through:

  • Over-the-air (OTA) software updates
  • A service appointment at a Ford or Lincoln dealership

All repairs will be provided free of charge to vehicle owners.

What Vehicle Owners Should Do

If you own one of the affected vehicles, Ford recommends:

  • Watching for recall notification letters from the company
  • Scheduling a dealership appointment when instructed
  • Checking your vehicle identification number (VIN) through the NHTSA recall lookup tool
